With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine per year in some regions, Algeria has one of the highest solar potentials in the world. However, this natural resource remains largely untapped. Despite pilot projects in the south and a few solar farms under development, the country is only using a fraction of its capacity.
Experts and industry players are calling for an acceleration of public and private investment in solar infrastructure. They believe that clear policies and tax incentives could encourage local companies to get involved in green energy production.
Young Algerian engineers are also getting involved. In Béchar, a startup has developed a system of mobile solar panels adapted to Saharan areas, reducing dependence on gasoline generators.
Algeria’s energy future could well lie in the sun. But for this to happen, synergy between the authorities, innovators, and civil society is essential.
